- In regards to a recent posting I have been accused of putting words into
- Dube Todd's mouth....amoung other things. :-) Below is what was said:
-
- *The only person giving you support is Dube Todd
- *who was another person that went off trying to say that someone was breaking
- *the law by asking for military daily use callsigns. He happened to be wrong
- *but "his heart was in the right place" right?
-
-
- And Dube Todd replied:
-
- >Mark Bitterlich's comment, "....Dube Todd who was another person that went
- >off trying to say that someone was breaking the law....." deserves retort.
- >First of all, I made no mention of breaking the law. Perhaps Bitterlich
- >ought to pay more attention to what he reads here. Secondly: I usually
- >say what I mean; I don't "try to say". What Mark is flaming is what HE
- >READ INTO what I said. So don't put words into my mouth, buster. If you
- >want to discuss the issues, fine; but don't put up your own agenda and
- >attack it as mine!
-
-
- However here is the exact quote from Dube on the subject:
-
- >In article <8911212358.AA17672@ti.com>, dube@cpdvax.csc.ti.com (DUBE TODD)
- >writes:
- >Several people have correctly cited the freedom to listen to any radio
- >communications. I support that. However, Balinski asked about the aircraft
- >home base, etc. While the radio transmissions he heard were obviously
- >unclassified, the association of the call signs with aircraft type, unit
- >of assignment and home base is classified information.
- ^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^
- So you are correct Dube, you never said anything specifically about breaking
- the law, you just inferred that the release of unit callsigns for military
- aircraft is a security compromise when associated with the name and homebase
- of the unit. However, I hope that you would agree that the release of class-
- ified information is considered to be "against the law", which is what I was
- talking about.
-
- By the way, to answer the above question once and for all. I personally
- checked with unit, Group, and Wing activities in this area and they informed
- me that daily use military aircraft callsigns are not classified and they do
- in fact respond to QSL cards (if sent with a SASE). If anyone needs a phone
- number to call to verify this, please send me a message. I informed Dube of
- this with personal email. Unit Public Relations Officers are the point of
- contact for getting QSL's from a particular unit. They are not REQUIRED to
- respond to you, but they are allowed and in some cases encouraged to do so.
-
-
-
- I said that Dube supported Jim Grubs. I got that impression from the
- following posting.
-
- >From: dube@cpdvax.csc.ti.com (DUBE TODD)
- >Subject: Packet compression
- >I believe that every Ham should be concerned
- >about the use of any methods or techniques that might work against the best
- >interests of the hobby. And I DON'T think we should try to palm off the
- >responsibility to the "Big Brother" we are all so afraid of. If the
- >compression technique works within the established rules, then there's no
- >problem; if not, then Jim has every reason to be concerned, as do the rest
- >of us.
- >Dube Todd, N5PDK
-
-
- If you want to get right down to it, I do not agree with Dube on
- worrying about new techniques or methods that might work against the
- best interests of the hobby. In my short 23 years as an amateur, I
- have noticed that the introduction of every new development and mode
- has been met by some with suspicion and worry about "what it might do
- to the hobby". But I have never seen the service actually threatened
- by advents in technology or by the use of new and/or innovative methods.
- Most of the rules concerning these new modes were made AFTER the new mode
- was developed. To do it the other way around would mean that the FCC would
- have to invent EVERYTHING.
-
- I believe that every ham should avoid being "concerned" but should
- instead encourage and contribute TOWARDS new methods and techniques,
- and should not immediately look for possible rule infractions before
- the idea has even jelled. I believe these worries (and others) are
- very premature and in some cases counterproductive.

- ARRL PFB NR 51 (ARLP051) 12/18/89
-
- THOUGH DECEMBER BEGAN WITH THE SOLAR FLUX AT 235, THE TREND HAS BEEN
- MOSTLY DOWNWARD SINCE. THERE WAS A DROP TO 183 BY 10 DECEMBER, ITS
- FIRST DAY UNDER 200 SINCE 30 OCTOBER. THE SLIDE DOWNWARD CONTINUED
- TO 167, THE LOWEST FLUX LEVEL SINCE SEPTEMBER. THE TREND HAS BEEN
- UPWRD SINCE 14 DECEMBER, BUT THE FLUX HAD REACHED ONLY 181 BY
- BULLETIN TIME.
-
- THERE HAS BEEN SLIGHTLY MORE VISIBLE ACTIVITY ON THE SUN IN RECENT
- DAYS, BUT NOTHING SPECTACULAR. THE FLUX RISE ON SUNDAY WAS SEVEN
- POINTS, WITH MORE LIKELY THIS WEEK. ON THE DARK SIDE OF THE
- PICTURE, THE SUNDAY SOLAR FLUX READING, 181, IS 54 POINTS BELOW THE
- CORRESPONDING DAY IN THE PREVIOUS SOLAR ROTATION.
-
- AT THIS TIME OF YEAR THE BEACONS NOW IN OPERATION ON 28 AND 50 MHZ
- ARE VERY HELPFUL. IF YOU HEAR 10 METER SKIP AT DISTANCES OF AROUND
- 1000 MILES OR LESS, THE CHANCES ARE GOOD THAT THE SHORT SKIP IS BY
- WAY OF THE E REGION OF THE IONOSPHERE. IF THE SIGNALS ARE STRONG
- AND FAIRLY STEADY, IT IS LIKELY THAT 50 MHZ MAY BE OPEN ALSO,
- PROBABLY AT SLIGHTLY GREATER DISTANCES, BUT IN ABOUT THE SAME
- DIRECTION. THE NUMBER OF 50 MHZ BEACONS IS INCREASING. MOST ARE ON
- CW, BELOW 50.1 MHZ.
-
- ANOTHER AID IN WORKING 50 MHZ DX IS FREQUENT MONITORING OF 28.885
- MHZ, WHERE BITS OF HOT INFORMATION ABOUT 50 MHZ ACTIVITY ARE
- EXCHANGED. FOR THIS WEEK, THE LIKELIHOOD OF 50 MHZ OPENINGS SHOULD
- IMPROVE IF THE SOLAR FLUX CONTINUES TO RISE, AS NOW SEEMS LIKELY.
-
- AMERICAN SUNSPOT NUMBERS FOR DECEMBER 7 THROUGH 13 WERE BETWEEN 89
- AND 186 WITH A MEAN OF 128.0. AR

-
- I have a Yaesu FT-727R. A couple of years ago someone posted an
- article describing how to expand its range to 100-199 MHz. I no
- longer have a copy of the article but I would like very much to be
- able to RECEIVE 158.82, my local police dispatch frequency. I am an
- EMT on a local rescue squad and the police dispatch us on this
- frequency. Although I have a beeper, hearing the police conversations
- may allow me to anticipate calls and get to them that much sooner.
- Anyone still have this information handy? Please send e-mail and
- I'll summarize to the net.

- Perhaps we could add more "channels" like ".politics", ".controversy",
- ".homebrewing", ".antennas", etc.? (Then as long as nobody modified their
- "radio" for "out of band" operation, most everybody should be happier. :=) )
- I'd much subscribe to a few more subnews groups than wait 15 minutes while my
- reader discards 80% of the traffic.
